In Defense Of "Get Enough"

 Good Morning!

Today I write this blog post in advance of the upcoming Beatles single, "Now And Then". However, this has nothing to do with The Beatles as a band and moreso deals with Paul McCartney.

BACKSTORY

2018 saw the release of Egypt Station, Paul's 17th (24th if you include orchestral? who cares) album as a solo artist. Initial reactions were mixed, with many praising his continued ability to keep up with the times and write songs for today, and some others dismissing the production style. Paul largely worked with Greg Kurstin for the album, who is most notable for his production work with Kelly Clarkson (Stronger) and Ellie Goulding (Burn) among others. Some additional collaboration was done with OneRepublic's producer Ryan Tedder. Paul and Ryan only worked on 3 tracks together, and of those 3 only Fuh You was released on the main album. Track 2, Nothing For Free, was tossed on as a bonus track to some select retailers. As far as the public was aware, there wasn't even a third song...

January 1st, 2019. Midnight. While in a voice chat with my peers, someone noticed that out of the blue Paul McCartney had released a new single. Apparently it was scheduled to be released online to coincide with the new year, and this fact was kept secret somehow. My memory is fuzzy, but I do remember sincerely liking the tune and being met with disgust by those peers, and myself being confused at their reactions. What was wrong with it? According to them, the usage of autotune was a dealbreaker, the main catalyst for hatred of the song to brew in anyone's mind. Personally, I only disliked the barely audible speech during the second act, because I couldn't (and still can't) hear what they're even saying. Here's why I think the auto-tune on Get Enough is perfectly fine.

MY DEFENSE

Evidence #1: Paul McCartney has always been chasing new vocal sounds. When recording songs like I'm Down or Long Tall Sally, he would put on a new voice to imitate the R&B singers of yesteryear. He reportedly spent an entire week attempting to capture a "morning voice" for his song Oh Darling by rushing down to EMI Studios at 6:30AM. And the album McCartney 2 features fervent abuse of tape to record vocal overdubs at different speeds, just for the sake of doing it. Over the decades, Paul has come to terms with the fact that nearly every single producer he encounters will try their best to remove/lower any vocal effects, due to his superstar status, but he pushes them not to.

Evidence #2: Paul McCartney is using Auto-Tune as an instrument and not as a crutch. Compare the song to tracks on the album Good Evening New York City. Only Mama Knows has pitch correction, meant to fix mistakes on the original vocal performance (not to mention anyways, most live albums have replaced vocals nowadays). Get Enough has these settings turned up to 11. On Get Enough, the effect only shows up starting with the phrase "now and then", then disappears for a couple lines and comes back for the climactic "but those days are erased from my mind". This was a clear, conscious decision. Do I even need to mention that he's already a good enough singer as it is?

Evidence #3: It suits the song. Get Enough is a power ballad, similar to the style of Meat Loaf or Journey but with a more modern sound. This is pure bias, but I can't imagine the track would sound too good without the effect. Would you prefer to hear the vocals of:
-Dear Boy without the phasing?
-You Gave Me The Answer without the EQ?
-Let Me Roll It without the delay?
-Live And Let Die without the double tracking?
-Arrow Through Me without the reverb?

CONCLUSION

Is Get Enough the greatest thing since sliced bread? To me, no. But it doesn't deserve as much harsh critique as I've been seeing for the past 4-going-on-5 years. I think the knee-jerk reaction to hearing Auto-Tune of any kind stems from the overuse of it in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Plus, and this is something I've failed to mention this entire time, Ringo Starr's albums from the past decade have..... extensive use of the tool, to say the very least. And those albums aren't well received by fans.

It's just a song anyways. People tend to get heated (myself included) about discussion of music to such extreme degrees, and it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of tier lists, category labels, and rankings of individual songs to the point where you aren't even listening to the music anymore.

4/22/23 Micky Dolenz Concert Review (and ramblings)

MICKY DOLENZ AT THE ROYAL OAK THEATRE

It wasn’t originally supposed to happen this way.

Back in October 2021, I had tickets to see the Monkees’ Farewell Tour. My first ever concert ever! But alas, 3 days before said concert me and my family were stricken with COVID. It was a depressing experience to say the least. 2 months later, Michael Nesmith passed away to the shock of many. It was also a depressing experience, to say the least. When Micky announced his solo tour, I used the refund money from the unused tickets to pay for the new ones.

Fast forward to Saturday, April 22nd 2023. Having properly stayed away from as many people as possible for the past week (which is relatively easy considering my shut-in status, but nonetheless) me and my parents have now travelled up to Detroit to come and watch Micky Dolenz sing and play.

After much waiting (the line stretched the entire block), we got in and only minutes later Micky was on stage. During his performance of Clarksville he seemed a little stiff, mostly unenthused. This demeanor changed a few songs in and he was moving around, emphasising important lyrics and holding his tambourine up with style.

The tributes to Davy, Peter, and Mike were nothing short of heartbreaking. Micky truly cared about his bandmates a lot, they were his brothers in life and their loss can’t be filled by a mere tribute, although it is lovely to see their faces.

Shades Of Gray’s meaning has been completely transformed with the accompanying videos & pictures on the giant screen behind the band. Images of the Monkees as kids appear, then images of their youth as teenagers before the rise of superstardom.

Speaking of the giant screen, lemme tell ya! It’s an essential part of the concert. Images from the Headquarters photo session are used as backdrops, or in the case of Band 6 as frontdrops to the music. It’s an amazing pairing. Footage from the TV show is used as well, and some snippets of film from Micky’s personal film archive. My favorite clip is of Davy on the diving board. He dove off of it while doing a headstand!

An intimate reading of Daily Nightly was a surprise to me during Mike’s tribute segment. He follows this up with a comical jab at how Mike didn’t even know what his own lyrics meant due to being high when he wrote it (a pot-fueled genius!)

Coco is such a wonderful singer. Her performance of Different Drum is FANTASTIC!!

As good as a time as all of this was, unbeknownst to me a few girls in the front row were apparently having TOO good of a time. One of them had attempted to climb onto the stage, having been dancing for the past hour (likely at the annoyance of a few behind them) and security was brought down to whisk the girls away. They danced while being dragged out. Hey, might as well go out in style! I hope they had a good time at least.

Towards the end of Early Morning Blues And Greens, a kettle drum is slowly rolled out onto the stage. Everyone there knew what was coming next, except………

As soon as the line “it’s not easy trying to tell her” is sung, all vocals are suddenly cut out. An unfortunate technical issue, in the middle of a performance! Fans in the audience tried to remedy this by singing loudly. Micky’s vocals were blipping in and out through the rest of the song, and during the scatting section he was unable to be heard by anyone despite his lips clearly moving. A real life example of the scene with Goin’ Down in The Monkee’s Paw!

Because of this unfortunate accident, the intermission was shown rather quickly. All of the technical bugs were fixed and Micky came back stronger than ever with an intimate performance of Porpoise Song with only a piano and his voice. What followed was hit after hit. Pleasant Valley Sunday! Daydream Believer! It was all a blur, i was so enraptured by the music.

The glaring omission of I’m A Believer was remedied for the encore, after Micky teased the audience with Stairway To Heaven. By this point, everyone was up and clapping and singing, it was a wonderful time. The spirit of The Monkees carries on through Micky & his energetic performances, as well as his wonderful backing band. I’m sure Davy Mike & Peter would’ve loved to watch.

THE MONKEES’ RECORDED HISTORY

THE MONKEES RECORDED HISTORY

What is THE MONKEES RECORDED HISTORY? It’s our way of presenting information on all audio The Monkees have (or don’t have) from the 1960s. We will be noting sources from acetates, interviews, studio sessions, radio promos, tv performances, and more!

The world of Monkees research is very small, but very devoted. I’d like to give a mutual nod of -respect to the Film & TV Archive, MonkeesLiveAlmanac, and Mixing Links, as well as the team at 7A Records. And obviously, the man who does most of the legwork around here, Andrew Sandoval. Without Andrew, I don’t think The Monkees would have as prevalent of a fanbase today!

Sources include Monkees Mixography, liner notes from the Headquarters Sessions box set (specifically, the tape boxes used for the backgrounds, which requires photo manipulation to gather details from), the Come To The Sunshine radio show, YouTube uploads, bootlegs, archival recordings not yet released officially, transcribed interviews available online, The Monkees’ website, Setlist.fm, [in progress]

The main source is The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story by Andrew Sandoval. The book is the result of decades of research; and while we understand and greatly appreciate the hard work done, we also believe in freedom of information to the public. As such, we’ve transcribed 50% of the book [and its 2005 edition too] in this document. The other 50% is new images, new interviews, anecdotes from the 60s, home movie discoveries, filming dates, and more!

There will be incorrect information. That’s a given. If you find correct info to fix that, let us know!

Green means a recording from this date was released officially or unofficially. The sources can vary.

Purple means a recording from this date is known to exist, but has not been released in any form yet.

Orange means a recording from this date is unconfirmed to exist, or is of unknown status [by the writers of this document]

Red means a recording on this tape is lost. This doesn’t mean it’s GONE per se, only currently not found.

Gray is notes. This will be for important information related to the session, not able to be explained with simple brackets or parenthesis.

If a date or song name has a ?, that means we are taking a shot in the dark, or a ballpark estimate. These can be changed if new information ever comes to light, so take them with a grain of salt.

If a date for a song has an X, that means there is no confirmed documentation to support a recording session, but there has to be one from this time period [unless time travel existed in the 60s!]

X/XX/69 DEMOS [Mike Nesmith]

-Lothario In A

-Great American Thunder Turkey

note: due to Red Rhodes’ album with these songs being released in 1979, it’s possible a typo was made in the copyright registry database. However, Mike has said on record in the 60s that he wanted to make a poetry book called “The Great American Thunder Turkey” so i’m leaving it here for now
