Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones LTD: Multitrack information

That Pisces set post sure did some numbers! I think it’s appropriate to explain why I included the things I did, while also giving important info separate from that post.

A lot of multitracks for Pisces were seemingly lost. Attempts were made in the past decades to retrieve what was available, and those were met with mixed (or I suppose un-mixed) results. 

SALESMAN

Outtakes: DON’T exist. There is a singular “jam” presumed to be from the Salesman tracking session, but has not been confirmed as such yet.

Basic 4-Track: UNKNOWN

Overdubbed 4-Track: DOES exist. Remixed many times, contains a scrapped “cigarette rap” over the ending. 

SHE HANGS OUT

Outtakes: DON’T exist.

Basic 4-track: UNKNOWN

Overdubbed 4-Track: DOES exist. Remixed in 2007.

8-Track: DOES exist. Detailed in Andrew’s Day-By-Day book, 2 tracks were left empty after the brass overdubs on tracks 5 & 6. Remixed in the 80s.

THE DOOR INTO SUMMER

Outtakes: DON’T exist. However, there are 2 earlier recorded versions of the song, one by The Monkees and one by Chip Douglas. The Chip version has yet to be released. There’s also an alternate lead by Mike existing on a mono mix.

Basic 4-Track: DOESN’T exist. 

Overdubbed 4-Track: DOES exist. However, this specific 4-track is lacking several overdubs and is largely incomplete. Despite this, I personally would like to hear this work-in-progress!

8-Track:DOESN’T exist. It was lost. :(

 Merry Christmas!

There’s a lot of material The Monkees recorded in 1968 that we, the fans, have not heard yet. Scores of material have been found since 2009, or were left off the TBTB&TM box for various reasons.

I believe, out of everything I have posted here thus far, that this hypothetical box set would be the most important & commercially viable candidate for a Rhino Records release, full stop. I feel so strongly about this one, I even gave it a title!

“Take 8 will be stopped abruptly by Howe (who feels it is too fast), and the pass that follows, Take 9, will be incredibly slow. Consequently, Bones will offer to play Hal Blaine a demo of the song before Take 10 to match tempo, but the drummer will quickly adjust without review.“

The recent Headquarters super deluxe box set is nothing short of fantastic. Andrew Sandoval has given Monkees fans so, so much to listen to over the past 2 decades, and everyone should be grateful for this.

There’s only one Monkees album left that hasn’t gotten an extensive box set treatment. Pisces. I’ve taken it upon myself to make a hypothetical box, just to see what we could get next year. 

NOTE: exact multitrack information isn’t known by me, and is assumed by interpereting information written or spoken by Andrew Sandoval. If any tracks here can’t exist, that is my own fault. 

NOTE 2: I didn’t include everything. As much as it’d be fun to hear all 1,000 takes of a given song, Disc space is key here as Rhino is really stingy when it comes to Monkees box sets now. 4 discs seems to be the absolute limit.

The Best Of The Monkees 1970-2016

 From the moment Changes was released, The Monkees had effectedly ended an entire wave of their career. Generations of people have worshipped, loved, adored, and appreciated their musical output from 1966 to 1970. Countless compilations have been made, each one attempting to encapsulate some of the “later period” material into the tracklists. 

To be frank, it sticks out like a sore thumb. I love songs like Admiral Mike and Gettin’ In, but they don’t fit next to anything from the 60s. It’s just different music from different times. As such, i’ve taken it upon myself to compile what I feel is the best of The Monkees’ musical output from 1970 to 2016, be it together or solo.
